How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to be a wellness expert?

To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you a defining moment and resulting “compelling story” that brought me to where I am today, coaching people like you on exactly what to do to get well and stay well.

That defining moment happened in 2009 after a series of visits to a cardiologist for heart palpitations that were keeping me up many a night. For a long time I had night palps, some even made me feel like I was dying. I had a number of EKGs at my general practitioner and my heart was okay, but after several repeat visits I was referred to a cardiologist. The first round I had a stress test and a heart catheterization. My heart was still ok. So what was wrong with me? My GP thought it might be the Mountain Dew I was drinking, but I thought because I only consumed caffeine in the morning it wasn’t an issue, since I knew caffeine bothered me if I drank it later in the day. Then I had a really bad night and went to the ER. They monitored my heart, but nothing serious showed up. I was referred to a different cardiologist this time, and he put me on a heart monitor for three weeks. Let me add a caveat here, while I had taken prescription meds in the past, I always wanted to know what was causing an ailment and then to take some meds to “fix” the problem and then not take the pills any more. Well this cardiologist found a three-second blip on my chart that indicated atrial fibrillation and he suggested pills to keep it in check, and to take these pills forever! I just couldn’t be on a pill until the day I died. And this was before I understood just what suppressing symptoms meant. So I revved up my research on the causes of palpitations and added atrial fibrillation to my research.

Mountain Dew was indeed part of my problem, though it wasn’t a caffeine issue, it was a brominated vegetable oil issue. What on earth is brominated vegetable oil or BVO?  It’s a processed food additive to help suspend citrus flavoring in soda pop. I know, I don’t get it either. But it interferes with thyroid function which, when in a compromised state can also cause palpitations. Hmmm? I had to eliminate a lot of other junk food from my diet as well, and after a period of time, allowing the body to rid itself of some of the toxic build up, my palpitations went away! Oh, and I lost 15 pounds without even trying due to eliminating all soda pop consumption.

I kept studying natural healing, and the more I learned the more engrossed I became. It’s really fascinating how the body can heal itself once we stop consuming the bad stuff and start consuming the nutritious stuff. And so I made a commitment to immerse myself into absolutely everything that had to do with natural healing and wellness. I read everything I could get my hands on, books, newsletters, and the internet. I discovered that people can become a coach and support others on their journey to wellness, so I became a certified health coach in 2011. I decided to become a mini expert on how to heal the body naturally.

I have since made a commitment to dedicate the rest of my professional life to helping other I-don’t-want-to-be-on-a-pill-till-I-die people who feel the same way I do, that there must be some reason behind an ailment. We can’t all have defective genes!

Who are your clients exactly?

I work with people just like you who want to find the cause of their ailments, not just block the symptoms with a pill, and then adjust their life accordingly to let go of old habits and mindsets that aren’t serving them well. For the most part my clients all know that their body is a self-healing gift from God, but they are so immersed in popular culture that they are overwhelmed by the “eat this not that” health advice that’s out commonly there or they want to heal naturally but don’t want to spend time researching scads of material to find what they need.

I don’t prescribe or unprescribe any medication; that is between you and your doctor. I work with people who don’t like being on meds or want to stay off of them.

I am happy to work with those who have issues with gluten intolerance, diabetes, their thyroid or heart, or weight problems, to name a few.

What happens if you haven’t yet worked with people who have my issues?

Your health and well-being are always my top priority and concern. I would never claim to be something I am not, or say that I can treat or cure something that I cannot. I am not a physical therapist, registered nurse, or a doctor. All of these practitioners have a place in health care depending on the current state of your condition. A holistic health coach is a complimentary practitioner to your traditional medical team. As Dr. James Chestnut says, the traditional medical team is the firefighter. They help you to put out the fire of your urgent medical need. But they are usually overbooked or it’s not in the scope of their practice to guide you in lifestyle changes that can help keep the fire from rekindling, and that’s where I come in. I am a wellness guide to help you modify your lifestyle to healthier choices.

If anyone ever came to me with serious medical issues outside the scope of my practice I would gladly help them find the best care through referrals to other professionals.

That being said, I’ve seen and experienced miracles with just the power of food, wholesome, real food. Your body is designed to survive, thrive and even heal itself without drastic medical measures. Many times we are the ones who interfere with our body’s natural healing process by our poor lifestyle choices. It’s not that we are trying to sabotage ourselves, but that we just don’t know and understand the ramifications of those choices.

Our bodies have the potential to thrive for many, many years with very little problems provided we take good care of them. Many of us haven’t been good stewards to our body, but, we can work to reverse the damage. Our body is constantly regenerating itself.

Biblically speaking, God said man can live up to 120 years, and numerous non-industrialized cultures can meet that mark regularly in their population. With a little faith in God, anything is possible. God gives us unexplained medical miracles; imagine the miracles we would receive if we worked within God’s plan! I believe that God wants you to have an abundant and healthy life.

How are you different from other health, wellness and lifestyle coaches?

I will be your advocate for change. Currently I offer two programs, one of which should meet your wellness pace, but they can be tailored to your speed as well. We all start at different points on our wellness journey and some of the information provided may take a bit to sink in. We are all unique, and I cater to unique individuals who want to find natural cures for their ailments.

Also, and most important, I am not new age-y. I don’t talk about the universe as some deity. My deity is the Christian God. There is a spiritual side to physical wellness, and that is fulfilled by a dedicated prayer life. While I am an equal opportunity health coach serving those who want to be well, my guide post is my Christian faith. I will not try to convert anyone, but if Christianity is offensive to you, we probably won’t make a good wellness team.

Many of the materials I received in my training had a new age flair that I had to modify to fit my faith. The new age movement is very subtle though, and constant effort is needed to keep my educational materials clear of it, since I am always adding new information to my programs.

Some people might call this a Christianization or baptizing of new age healing techniques, but I disagree. God created us and the universe. All gifts of healing come from Him. If a healing technique is valid and works then it is good for all. Just because some new agers have made claims to much of the natural healing market doesn’t mean that they invented it.  But, because of their claims, there are many natural healing messages that are mainstream AND new age-y. Honestly, I haven’t filtered all of them out myself yet either, it’s all a work in progress.

What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me?

My programs were created for people who are totally ready and absolutely excited about getting healthy and well. You want to rid yourself of aches and pains and find out what it feels like to be truly well. You have to be willing to experiment and try new things, because it’s the old things that have gotten you to the state where you are considering a health coach in the first place.

While we all have to work within the confines of our family structure, you shouldn’t use your family as an excuse for not trying new ideas and recipes and foods. In fact, over time, the whole family will benefit from what you’ll learn with me. So, if you or your family is really stubborn about trying new things or creating new habits then we probably wouldn’t work well together. Health coaching is all about change, even the coach changes with time.

In addition to being open to change, you also need to be committed to the program that you sign up for. Consider it like a college level class. While I will be your guide, the tests you take are made by you and graded by you. I’ll be there to help keep you accountable, but you are the student in an independent study class, and you will receive the benefit of your efforts.

And speaking of benefits, every positive health change generates benefits for you. But being that we are all different people coming from different backgrounds, the results might not appear as quickly as you would like. Don’t get discouraged. You’re on your way. Effort, commitment, persistence and understanding are all key to your wellness journey.

For what type of person are your programs NOT going to work?

Please know I’m selective in who I work with and I cherry-pick my clients, choosing those who are ready to make a difference in their lives. I really want people to have the BEST chance possible to get great results and see and feel the effects of living their healthiest, most ideal life. I want a client to aim high and do their best, and part of that best is not looking for a quick fix. Wellness takes time, just as getting sick took time. If I feel that you're not really interested then it won't work for you. If someone feels “forced” by their doctor or joins half-heartedly, chances are she will waste her time and money, and also mine.

If you are not sure you're ready, it's okay. Please do yourself 3 favors:

  1. Think and pray about your priorities. Ask yourself if your life is going the way you think is best overall.
  2. Examine a week in your life – take 7 consecutive days to journal these things: what you're eating, drinking, and how much, and what emotions you notice during your day, and any other patterns that stand out.

As mentioned in the previous section, I would rather not work with people who are stubborn or defiant, or those who constantly make excuses for not acting on recommendations, or those who challenge every aspect of their program. If this may be you now, I gently and respectfully ask that you not call and I hope you understand why. I wouldn’t want you to waste your time and money. Is that fair? Only when you're ready then.

What exactly is The Wildly Well System™ and what does it include?

Being Wildly Well takes well-intentioned and intelligent effort. It involves your whole person, mind, body and spirit. It’s about discovering what is best for you, acknowledging God-given truths and guidance, and letting go of destructive behaviors.

When you become aware of what's not going well, or what your biggest obstacles and challenges are, then you begin taking serious action on it. Here’s what the Program gets you to do:

  1. It’s your LIFE and HEALTH – Make it a priority
    There are many things that call on your time during the day, some are more critical than others. Together we will discuss when and how you are making time for healthy habits so that you can work to avoid critical health issues. We will focus on your schedule to add in important health actions and pause unnecessary time-wasters. Essentially, we come up with what's important for you to be doing more of – things you already know you should be doing.
  1. Get clear on taking DECISIVE ACTION

We can talk “all day”, but if no different actions are taken, you will have little to no results. While our discussions will be very enlightening, empowering, and inspirational, in order for you to improve your current situation there must be some clear action steps taken along with a new attitude and approach. We will work on the best path for you to take towards success.

  1. Craft your IDEAL LIFE in small simple steps

Together over the course of your program, we will find out exactly what is best for you to do. We'll break it down into small, easy bites so that you don't feel overwhelmed. Life is challenging enough. The great thing about this step is that you'll have actions AND dates to implement.

  1. Thinking AND inking the important things

Bring your calendar, your journal, or any notebook you want to use. Very liberating on its own, you'll be freeing your mind by journaling thoughts and gratitude, as well as food and mood. As great ideas and solutions come up, you will be ready to jot them down and take action.

  1. Food for thought – increasing your WISDOM

We take stock of what you already know (probably more than you think!), then add to your valuable knowledge by providing handouts, articles, resources, recipes, etc. Wisdom has two pillars, knowledge and understanding. Knowing about healthy living is one thing, but understanding the choices we need to make inspires action!

  1. Focus Focus Focus

One of the most valuable benefits of your program is the amount of focused time and attention you are able to give your health – your most valuable asset. Whether we meet in person or over the phone or via email, those hours are well-spent in pulling you forward into your ideal healthy life. It may be 2 to 3 hours per month of focus on improving your health (not just thinking about it, but doing something about it). You will see how in turn you will SAVE time and money by being healthy!

  1. Ongoing SUPPORT, encouragement, and accountability to continue successfully

The healthy beliefs, mindsets, and actions we put in place will almost run by themselves naturally and soon, you will be living  free of weight burdens and food enslavement. Congratulations!! Does this really work?

Yes! The result of our work is an approach to holistic wellness (total person - mind, body and spirit) that, over time and with your dedication, works consistently to move you to healthier choices and happier days.

  • Discover the source of your troubles as together we analyze your symptoms. Many problems are layered and so expect a layered solution to evolve.
  • Find out where you are getting stuck in your wellness journey and strive to get out of that rut.

  • Learn good stewardship of person and planet, because what hurts us hurts the planet, and vice versa.

How quickly can I expect results?

Obviously, this depends on how much you put into the assignments that you receive and how much you want to change the way you feel. That said, virtually all clients see results within the first few of weeks in the form clearer thinking, better sleep, more energy and weight loss. Healthy diet and exercise are needed for weight loss and it takes some time for the body to adjust to adequate nutrition and movement, so weight loss might take a little more time. Again, it all depends on the individual. Commitment to the program and a positive attitude also produce quicker results, especially if you work to create new habits in your life.

How can I guarantee myself that I will get all the results I want?

Do all of your assignments, such as journaling, eating healthy foods, practicing portion control, and exercising, and have a positive, no excuses attitude. Be focused and aware of what you're doing, especially when it comes to thoughts, words, and actions. Only you is in charge of you.

Understand that having a health coach is not a “quick fix,” it’s not magic and it may take up to a year to see everything you want come to fruition, in fact, your goals will evolve as time goes by, as your wellness wisdom grows. If you focus on wellness results you will be able to guarantee your success, if you focus on specific numbers by a certain time, you may be disappointed. Being Wildly Well™ is about the whole you, not just certain aspects. We will work towards them, but other positives will be gained as well!

Will I recover the investment I put into this coaching program?

Yes! You will be investing time and money in return for healthy living techniques. It is true that many of the suggested food choices will be organic with will also cost you more, but your energy will improve and you won’t have to spend as much sick time to recover from a cold. Ideally, time spent in the doctor’s office will be reduced as well. So savings will be felt in many corners.
